"To a Man" is a investigation into the male experience of my generation. Centered around the staten Island community young men will answer to the question "what do you think your role is as male in todays society?. Based on the methods of Joseph Campbell I will relate the hero's journey to the present.
"A hero ventures forth from the world of common day into a region of supernatural wonder: fabulous forces are there encountered and a decisive victory is won: the hero comes back from this mysterious adventure with the power to bestow boons on his fellow man"
Campbell, Joseph. The Hero with a Thousand Faces. Princeton University Press, 1949.
"To A Man " begins in the quiet yet bussling staten island community. Dualism is portrayed with shots of a Industry and nature. Such as the Boat graveyard, views of the new york harbor, the Conference house woods and close ups on seagulls juxtaposed with Men waking up, buying coffee and bagel at the local deli, travelling to work and traffic.
Fade into interviews with Staten Island young adult males between the ages of 19 and 36. Interviews will take place in individual's apartments, at Jim Hanley's Universe Comic Book Store, and various other locations to be determined. Questions will include: What do you think your role is an a male in today's world? Do you have heroes? Do you ever think of your life as a quest or journey? Do you remember any moment of your life feeling like a rebirth? I will also a few shoot older men and a therapist to reference the interview responses.
"To a Man" will be brought to conclusion with a response to the interviews mixed with found footage from popular culture. The credits will roll over a man coming home from work, stuck in traffic, on the SI highways.
