Suburbia: An exploration of the subconscious landscape

Suburb mostly refers to a residential area. They may be the residential areas of a city (such as in Australia), or separate residential communities within commuting distance of a city (such as in the United States and Canada). Some suburbs have a degree of political autonomy, and most have lower population density than inner city neighborhoods. Suburbs grew in the 19th and 20th century as a result of improved rail and later road transport and an increase Suburbs tend to proliferate around cities that have an abundance of adjacent flat land.[1] Any particular suburban area is referred to as a suburb, while suburban areas on the whole are referred to as the suburbs or suburbia, with the demonym being a suburbanite. Colloquial usage sometimes shortens the term to burb.

Using Staten Island (Mostly South Shore) as an example. I will transpose the subconscious landscape with the conscious external landscape. I will shoot HD video of abandoned and operational strip malls, Big box plazas and McMansions both forclosed and inhabited. Images of lonely shoppers, parking of cars in mass parking lots and for sale signage combined with Editing, angles and soundtrack, will elicite  feelings of compulsion and emptiness. I am hoping to create an atmosphere of questioning (without narration or dialogue) about stereotypical ideas of success and or the “American Dream”.

The Film itself will be three shorts of three minutes each. Each film will start with wide shots of landscape and progress thru timing into more and more detailed versions of the landscape. I plan to shoot the Mall Area, a half empty housing development on Hylan Blvd and if possible the Staten Island Landfill (see work samples because I have shot there before and I have contacts). If the landfill does not work out I will shoot the Kmart plaza on Hylan Blvd.

I want the films to function as experimental pieces that help the audience to question the consumer compulsion.
